“My dance teacher said to me that the closest thing a human being will ever come to flying unaided is ballet,” Cunningham says; familiar territory for someone born on an Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. Cunningham trained at the Mid-Ohio Valley Ballet School, and gained early acceptance to the dance division at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music his junior year of high school. Cunningham missed his high school graduation because he was performing a piece choreographed by Victoria Morgan as part of a showcase for CCM, and went on to become a trainee at Cincinnati Ballet in 2008. “I used to hate modern dance and didn’t like any kind of contemporary, and now it’s growing to be one of my favorite forms of expression,” says Cunningham.
Fun fact: One of James’s favorite hobbies is fish-keeping and taking care of his 30 gallon aquarium. “I keep African cichlids. They are very bright and colorful and also quite aggressive.”
Favorite roles: Puck, A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Lost boy, Peter Pan
