Meet the Staff

Melinda Dobson, Production Stage Manager

Development Newsletter_Dec 2[1]What is your role with Cincinnati Ballet?

I am the Production Stage Manager. During a production, my role is to ensure lighting, scenery, and props cues are executed seamlessly.

How long have you been with the Company?

I’ve been with the Company since 2011.

What jobs did you have previously?

I’ve worked as Production Stage Manager for the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven, Connecticut, as well as Stage Manager for Indianapolis City Ballet’s Event of Stars Galas from 2014 to 2016.

I have also spent time as the Stage Manager for Kansas City Dance Festival since 2014, and as Director of Client Relations for the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana, Illinois.

While I was having kids, I was even a pre-kindergarten teacher at Youthland Academy in Loveland, Ohio!

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Making sure that all of the balls stay in the air throughout the ballet’s ever-changing production needs without looking like it’s hard to do so.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

It’s definitely the finished product and the sound of laughter and applause that the dancers receive when the show is ready and really great.

If you have any downtime, what do you like to do?

I like to be in the opposite type of space than a darkened theatre. I’m an outdoor girl that loves camping, hiking, gardening, and playing with my children.

Where’s your favorite place to go on vacation, and why?

South Texas. It’s warm, and there’s access to a big body of water for fishing and beach time.  My best friends live there, too, so that’s a bonus!

Tell us a little about your family.

I have two children, Lillis (age 12) and Liam (age 9). They are smart, gregarious, and just starting to enjoy the idea of what I do for my job…which is great.  My daughter was even in her first show this year at school.  I also have a Chihuahua named Chico, who is two years old.

Do you have any phrases that you live by? If so, what are they and why?

One is “Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part”.  I also like “Leave the drama for the stage” and “Living the Dream!”

What is something that’s at the top of your bucket list?

I’d love to travel with my kids across the Trans-Canadian Railway, and also on a riverboat down the Mississippi from North to South!
