Director’s Cut

A Celebration! | September 16-17

20 years of excitement and innovation at Cincinnati Ballet culminate with an all-star lineup handpicked by Artistic Director & CEO Victoria Morgan. We’re celebrating her 20th Season by showcasing her all-time favorite works, world-renowned choreographers and two world premieres!

Patriotic Pas

World Premiere by Victoria Morgan

To kick off her 20th Season, Victoria Morgan contributes the world premiere of Patriotic Pas, a lively duet set to composer Morton Gould’s American Salute. This witty work was inspired by the dancers themselves, and is sure to delight! “When I was first setting King Arthur’s Camelot, dancers would pick up the faux rehearsal swords during breaks and twirl, throw and catch them in the most clever ways. I loved watching, and their play inspired this ballet. The music is a celebratory, energetic piece; I knew I wanted dance-fireworks to match it! It is a tough, little knock-your-socks-off classical piece, unlike anything else on the program!” As one of only five female artistic directors of mid-sized and major ballet companies across the U.S., Victoria Morgan has led Cincinnati Ballet as Artistic Director since 1997.

Capricious Maneuvers

Athletic, humorous and full of youthful verve, Capricious Maneuvers is choreographed by world-famous New York City Ballet resident choreographer and soloist Justin Peck. This exciting and energetic ballet is set to Lukas Foss’s Capriccio, performed live onstage. A star of the ballet world, Peck was recently the subject of the documentary Ballet 422, and has been profiled in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and beyond.

Selections from Raymonda

Originally choreographed by the legendary Marius Petipa (Don Quixote, The Sleeping Beauty), Raymonda features the best of classical ballet: drama, courtly pageantry and stunning technical skill. Students of Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy join Principal Dancer Sarah Hairston and Senior Soloist Zack Grubbs in this special farewell performance. Director’s Cut marks the last time these beloved artists will take the stage before they retire from performing and go on to serve as the Academy’s new leadership.

World Premiere by Ma Cong

“Ma has a facility for moving individuals in inventive ways,” David Lyman, Cincinnati Enquirer. Ma Cong, sought-after international choreographer and resident choreographer for Tulsa Ballet, thrilled audiences last season with his breathtaking contemporary ballet Mind on the (Re)Wind. Set to the music of Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds, his next much-anticipated world premiere is sure to wow audiences yet again.

Fusion (Excerpts)

San Francisco Ballet principal dancers Sarah Van Patten and Luke Ingham join the festivities to honor Victoria Morgan’s early career as a Principal Dancer with SFB. They perform excerpts from Yuri Possokhov’s fluid, enigmatic contemporary ballet Fusion, set to music by British composer Graham Fitkin.

Prohibition Condition

Created by Cincinnati Ballet Soloist and emerging choreographer James Cunningham, this virtuosic solo is a dizzying, humorous treat, danced to a score by Dmitri Shostakovich. Cunningham has unique choreographic talent; Cincinnati Ballet fans may remember his contributions to Cincinnati Ballet’s Choreography Workshop and the Constella Festival — where his work has been featured annually since its beginnings in 2011.

Black Swan Pas de Deux

This iconic duet from Swan Lake features powerful choreography and music! Two new dancers, Chisako Oga and Jose Losada, and two longtime Cincinnati Ballet dancers Daniel Wagner and Sirui Liu, will showcase their outstanding skills.
