Expect the unexpected | March 17-18

Keeping a finger on the pulse of the contemporary dance world, Bold Moves features Cincinnati Ballet like you’ve never seen before! Each performance features two exhilarating and diverse dances, boldly exploring innovation and defying traditional expectations of ballet. Bold Moves showcases groundbreaking artistic collaboration and cultural exchange with Israeli innovators including the famed choreographer Ohad Naharin and Cincinnati’s own Ariel Quartet.

Minus 16

Cincinnati Ballet performs Minus 16, an exciting, critically-acclaimed dance by choreographer Ohad Naharin, Artistic Director of the Tel-Aviv based company Batsheva Dance Company. Minus 16 is a collection of vignettes incorporating improvisation and Naharin’s acclaimed “Gaga” method. Gaga is a language of movement created by Naharin that challenges dancers to liberate themselves and explore new and inventive ways to use their bodies – by connecting with music, the mind and the space around them. The work features a dynamic score ranging from Dean Martin to mambo, and techno to Israeli folk songs. Irresistible and mesmerizing, Minus 16 breaks down barriers between performers and audience members, making each performance unique and excitedly unpredictable.

Cut to the Chase

World Premiere

Cincinnati Ballet proudly presents an athletic and sensual world premiere created by Cincinnati Ballet Resident Choreographer Adam Hougland. His brand new work is set to Beethoven’s String Quartet “Op. 18, No. 1 in F Major”, performed live on stage by the award-winning ensemble, Ariel Quartet. Audiences love choreographer Adam Hougland’s work for its striking imagery, dramatic power and passionate musicality. This is his seventh world premiere for the company, following beloved works including Mozart’s Requiem, Rite of Spring, Firebird and more. Originally formed in Israel during the members’ high school years, the Ariel Quartet now performs all over the world and is the faculty Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. American Record Guide described the Ariel Quartet as “a consummate ensemble gifted with utter musicality and remarkable interpretive power.

“Minus 16 not only delights in its own wackiness, but also celebrates the joy of dancing.”

-San Francisco Chronicle

“Naharin has combined pure movement and theater in pieces charged with tension and drama that nonetheless, he claims, go beyond political metaphor or any particular meaning; Naharin is instead ‘‘turned on by the act of composition,’’ by textures, colors, rhythms.”
