Greetings! My name is Janessa Touchet and I have been dancing with Cincinnati Ballet since 2001. I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Cincinnati to become an Apprentice Dancer with the Ballet. Over the years I have grown through the ranks and have achieved the highest honor of being a Principal Dancer for Cincinnati Ballet. This position requires extensive training in ballet technique and skills in artistry and interpretation with eight-ten years experience in a professional company.

The most essential piece of equipment I use is my pointe shoes. The pointe shoe is a type of footwear designed specifically for the female dancer. It allows us to stand on the tips of our toes - or en pointe - for a prolonged period of time. The effect is that the dancer appears to move in performance space as though weightless.

A female ballet dancer’s performance is very dependent upon the right pair of pointe shoes. Our art form, as we know it today, would cease to exist if it were not for the pointe shoe. It is essential that we provide quality “equipment” to support the amazing dancers we have from around the world and across the country.

The beauty of ballet comes at a price; simply keeping our dancers in pointe shoes is a remarkable financial undertaking. Every year, Cincinnati Ballet spends around $75,000 on pointe shoes in order to continue to entertain, educate and inspire our audiences.
